New year, new challenges. We hit the ground running in January...our Lotto continues, out Stripe Young Scientisits represented the school brilliantly in Dublin, our Robotics teams defeated all comers and our leaving certificate class took a well earned break before the mocks to stretch their horizons in Cork. And, that was just the first two weeks...

We had qualified six projects for the Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, the most of any school in Galway again, and the Christmas break and start of the year saw the various groups preparing themselves, finalising their projects and learning their lines in preparation for the big outing to Dublin.

Senior students Oisin Redmond and Aidan McNeill developed and researched their very topical project, ‘Experience V Theory; should the theory test be mandatory’, which focuses on driver habits. Fifth years Evan Wei and Nikodem Kania, investigated the role and resilience of Vitamin C with their Chemistry based project ‘Supplements v Superfruits: Which source of vitamin C survives best over time’. Leaving Certificate students Julia Matysik and Anastasija Tatarnikova's project is another Chemistry based one, centred around the role of anti-oxidants in herbs and fruits in counteracting the harmful aging effects of common oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide in a project entitled ‘A Clock Ticking on Health: Measuring Antioxidant Levels in Food Sources Using the Iodine Clock Experiment’.

Third year students Lena Lewandowska and Auji Astrizal developed their project ‘Life without a buzz: The impact of Yondr pouches on daily life’ following their perceptions and experiences of living without their phones during the school day. Second year student Mohammed Ashir Anwar's project ‘NeuroSync: AI Powered Support for Cognitive and Neurological Care’ in the Health and Wellbeing category, has weighed heavily on his AI skills to develop a means of treating and recognising Dementia traits in patients. Also in second year, Crystal Quinn and Liya Walsh have extended the work on their project from last year by focusing on the representation of females in science books in the new updated Senior Cycle courses, ‘Breaking the Bias: Have science books evolved enough to represent female scientists fairly?’ Brilliant research and analysis from all the groups, well done!

Day 1 for our scientists at the Stripe Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition saw us set up for a day of judging and excitement. When all was done and dusted we hahd had a great time with the judges, hung out with the Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton TD, then wandered around Dublin to wind down.

Day 2 saw all the judging all completed, new friends made, and 60 visitors from the school up for the day to share in the excitement. Tired minds nevertheless managed to make the disco to re-energise

Day 3 great to see past CMM Galway participants Ruihan and Dan come along to visit, before we had downtime with a bit of fun before the Awards ceremony. Well done to Liya and Crystal who won the Irish Science Teacher's Association award and were Highly Commended in their category, Ashir who took second place in his Junior Technology category, and Julia and Anastasija who won a Display Award for their fine poster work which excellently explained their project. This was our most successful outing ever to the YSTE, taking home 4 awards from our six projects!

Day 4 and the pressure off for our young scientists, who quickly got into fun mode! What a fantastic four days, meeting cool people like astronaut Astronaut Norah Patten, Mark the Science Guy and the Taoiseach, stocking up on freebies for the year, meeting new friends and learning so much new stuff...roll on next year

Great work from our Junior IQ Robotics team of Keith, Darragh, Dylan, Adonis, Franciszek, Mashal, Saeed and Konrad,...and Wall-e the robot, who won both the Thermo King Excellence Award and the Robot Skills Award at the VEXIQ 2026 regional finals at Atlantic Technological University. Under the guidance of their teachers Ms. Sinéad Philllips and Ms. Niamh Hession they overcame the challenge of 8 other schools to take the titles and now have national finals in Cork to look forward to at the end of February. Fantastic work lads.

Another outstanding event for our STEM students as the Senior Robotics team emulated their Junior counterparts when taking the VEX V5RC Robotics title in ATU
With their robot, Cuddy Bot, they fended off the challengers from all across the Galway Mayo region before winning the final with a last second manoeuvre. Matthew and Alex (co-captains), Séamus, Evan, Oisín, Aodhán, Alan, Thomas, Lucy, Lillian, Cathal, Konrad, Yehor, Oliver, Eddie, Daniel and Ion, along with team manager Teresa Hannon, and teachers Sinéad Phillips and Niamh Hession are now gearing up for the National Finals in Cork the last week of February.
Special thanks to Aerogen for sponsoring the brilliant polo shirts for the team. What talent we have!!

All our Transition year and LCA students were delighted to attend a cookery demonstration by renowned chef JP McMahon organised by the Home Economics Department... JP was very generous with his time and gave some excellent tips and advice to which there was a great reaction with plenty of probing questions, and then to top it off, some very tasty food to sample! There was also huge interest in the raffle with two lucky students heading home with his excellent cookbook and the Aniar apron he wore during the demo! Thank you so much to JP for coming along, and well done to the Home Ec department for organising it all.
