We returned from our mid-term Halloween break ready for action, and despite the focus being the forthcoming Week 10 exams we still managed to fit plenty in to our busy school life.
Twenty-seven fifth-year students, accompanied by Ms. Dockery, Mr. Bell & Fr. Martin Whelan, visited the captivating ancient burial site at Newgrange in County Meath. The visit provided an opportunity for students to explore archaeological evidence of humanity's search for meaning. Additionally, the Art students were able to study the monument as part of their Leaving Certificate Visual Studies course. The students thoroughly enjoyed this enriching experience. He came away with a brand new iPad AND a place in the national finals next Tuesday in Dublin! A huge congrats to all our students who participated on Tuesday - Konrad, Aodhan, Rudy and Nathan, and to their teachers Ms. Whelehan and Ms. Gallagher. They did CMMG proud and presented excellent arguments against the motion that "AI is Not a Threat to Humanity".
A fantastic and competitive event held in the beautiful library in Ballinasloe. Well done to all involved and best of luck to Muhammad Ashir in the final
We had a brilliant night at the Calling All Foodies fundraising evening in the
The Ardilaun Hotel during the week.
Well done to Ms. Mary McKearney and her hard-working organising team who made it all happen, and a huge thank you to all who supported and attended, all those who set up their stalls, our chefs,
Jp McMahon, Chris Kerley from
The Ardilaun Hotel, and Martin O'Donnell from
Blackrock Cottage, who delighted the audience with their expertise, MC Ollie Turner from
Galway Bay FM, the
The Ardilaun Hotel for hosting us and everyone who helped in the smooth running of the event. More photos can be found on our

Congratulations to
Scoil Éinde Boys NS. who won the Fr. Seán Manning Galway Primary School Quiz for the second year in a row, following a tie-break with Scoil Naomh Bride Tullokyne. There was some brilliant answering from both teams, scoring 41 out of a possible 48 is some achievement, and it is a pity that any of the teams had to lose out. Craughwell NS finished in third place in what was a very close contest between all forty teams gathered in the study hall. As always, huge credit is due to our sponsors
#Medtronic , Clada Minerals, and to the
Galway Science & Technology Festival for helping us to promote this event in memory of Seán
Hard luck to our Senior Science Quiz teams that competed at the Irish Science Teachers Association quiz at ATU Galway City during Science Week. We were always in contention for one of the four qualifying spots but faltered near the end and were unable to win through in a tie break situation. Although disappointed that we won't get a chance to defend the National title we won last year, it was a great achievement to finish 5th and 6th from 30 teams. Well done to the winners Dominican Taylor's Hill, and best of luck to the four Galway schools heading to the national finals in TCD
As part of our Science week activities we were delighted to host Dr. Michel Dugon, aka 'the Bug Doctor', from the Zoology department in the University of Galway. He enthralled our students with interesting facts and details about his exotic animals, and as the photographs portray allowed us to get up close and personal
Some photos are shown here, with all the others taken on the day accessible through our

During the week we had a Cooking with Chemistry event organised by Ms. Dowling in the Home Economics lab, where students experimented with raising agents, then ate the results (not best scientific practice...but tasty!). Ms McKenna organised the competition to make the 'car' from basic materials that traveled farthest.
Ms. Phillips organised the daily Brainteaser, and the schedule, keeping science on the tip of the tongue, and minds active each day, while Mr. Carey organised the visit of the Bug Doctor, Dr. Michel Dugon from the Zoology department of the
University of Galway.
Alas, there will be no direct opportunity to defend our national ISTA Senior Science quiz Title, as our teams narrowly failed to make it to the National finals, missing out on qualification in a play off at
#AtlanticTechnologicalUniversity. However, the future is bright as was demonstrated at the Fr. Sean Manning Primary Science Quiz, held in a packed study hall on Friday afternoon
Well done also to Mr. Carey, who was awarded the 'Galway Science Person of the Year' accolade by the Galway Science and Technology Festival committee.
Well done to the brainteaser winners throughout the week
Monday: Alan Kania
Tuesday: Konrad Peyton and Aodhán Kenny
Weds: Jean Harlamovs and Nathan Gbinigie
Thurs: Brandon Harrison
Fri: Konrad Peyton, Óisín Redmond and Aodhán Kenny
In sports we have had a busy start to November as our U-15 soccer team, for whom Jonathan Echefu was once again selected to represent Ireland, this time in Portugal, beat Seamount Kinvara, our U-16 Boys Volleyball beat Drumshambo and our U-16 Girls Basketball team beat Merlin College in an exciting group match, winning in a tense extra-time play off to qualify for the Galway league quarter-final. They then took on and beat Ard Scoil Mhuire from Ballinasloe and have made the Semi-Final...go girls
Some great artwork for our Trick or Treat Thursday before the break...congrats to the Artober winners Eironas and Leon, so talented!
Well done to all our students and teachers who volunteered to help out at the CMMG stand at the Galway Science & Technology Festival at University of Galway on Sunday. This was the perfect start to #scienceweek, and we have lots more events taking part in the school over the next few days
Huge thank you to all our school community for your contributions to our annual
Team Hope#ChristmasShoeboxAppeal. We are so proud of all our student volunteers and donors, and to Ms. Gallagher, Ms Whelehan and Ms. Hession for coordinating the collection.
We are delighted to have contributed many boxes to children in need all around the world. This year, we had approx. 60 boxes and they will likely go to Africa.
Our school library committee & Book Club Members would like to thank
Gill Books for their extremely generous donation of new books to our school library! The hip hop collection range in particular has been an instant hit!
We would also sincerely like to thank
PwC Ireland Careers in Galway for their donation of €250 towards library furniture. This will make a huge difference to our school library space. Thank you!
Our Crafts Club is doing sterling work every Wednesday at lunchtime. Everyone is very welcome to drop by and get involved
During the break we heard the brilliant news that former St. Mary's College student, and teacher, Paul Conroy, was awarded the accolade of Gaelic Footballer of the Year. Paul soldiered for a long time in the Red and Black of one of our founding schools, St. Mary's, and for those teachers who worked with him while he was here it was no surprise that he was given this award, only that it took so long to recognize his ability and talent. Well done Paul.
We also heard over the break that Leaving Certificate 2024 student Fortune Igbokwe was awarded a prestigious sports scholarship from University of Galway. Fortune won the award for basketball, having represented both CMMG and St. Mary's as both a player and coach over the years.
