Parsia Jahanzad, Amala-Chukwu Adams and Sean Okeke from Coláiste Muire Máthair Galway proudly display the crystal perpetual trophy that they received following victory in the Biopharmaceutical Ireland sponsored Irish Science Teachers’ Senior Science Quiz held at Trinity College Dublin over the weekend. During science week over 250 teams had started out in this competition, which tests students’ knowledge of the Leaving Certificate Biology, Chemistry, Technology and Physics courses as well as their General Science knowledge, with the best teams from fourteen different ISTA regions nationwide qualifying for the final. The CMMG team was amongst the four qualifiers from Galway, the others being Dominican College, Calasanctious College and Coláiste Baile Chláir, who competed at this year’s All Ireland final, having qualified from the Galway region ISTA finals held at ATU during science week. This is a fantastic achievement for the College, who had to overcome the challenge of 43 teams from schools all across the country, eventually beating off the challenge of Presentation Brothers Cork, Kilkenny CBS and Blackrock College Dublin to win by a single point. Coached by science teacher Anthony Carey, CMMG are the only Galway school ever to have won this prestigious competition, although this is the second time that the school has taken this title, having also won as St. Mary’s College back in 2009.
Fr. Seán Manning Primary Science Quiz
We had a very busy study hall at the end of science week as we welcomed over 40 teams, representing 15 different primary schools, to compete for the Fr. Seán Manning Trophy and some exceptional prizes sponsored by Medtronic Galway
There were some excellent performances, with some exceptional answering, which eventually saw Scoil Einde beat Knocknacarra Educate Together National School to the title following a tie-break, both teams having finished with 39 points out of 48. Knocnnacarra also finished in 3rd place.
Well done and thank you to all the schools, the teachers and parents who supported, to Medtronic Galway and Clada Minerals for their support and to all our teachers and students who helped organize the event
