Although we are officially a new school our soccer tradition is firmly established.
From humble beginnings way back in the early 1970s, St Mary’s College became one of the most successful second level Colleges in the game of second level soccer in Ireland. As St Mary’s College Galway we have won ten Connacht Senior ‘A’ Cup (1980,1984,1988,1994 ,2001,2002,2006,2008,2010,2012) and four All Ireland Senior ‘A’ titles (1988,2001,2006 and 2010) as well as two U-16 ‘A’ all Ireland titles in 1994 and 1995. In addition, we won a plethora of Connacht Cups in all age groups, the 1990’s saw St Mary’s complete virtually all U-16 (Junior) Connacht Cup finals while the 2000’s saw St Mary’s as the major force in the coveted Connacht Senior ‘A’ Cup.
The 2007-8 season was a landmark one, as St. Mary's College became the only school to annex each title available when we won the First Year, U-14, U-15, U-17 and senior (U-19) Connacht school's titles, a fete that we doubt will ever be matched.
In 1995 St Mary’s by virtue of winning the U-16 All Ireland in Galway traveled to Germany and represented Ireland in the World Cup for secondary schools in Duisburg in the Ruhr region.
Soccer is very much on the agenda of CMMG. In our inaugural season we competed in the final of the Connacht Senior Shield, losing out to a CBC team featuring two Irish Internationals. This season we have boys teams entered in the Connacht First Year, U-15 and Senior Cups. Our girls are very much a work in progress, however, based on the enthusiasm being shown so far we may well be a force to reckon with in the future.
A huge thanks is due to former St. Mary's student Paul Costello whose company PC Electrical kindly sponsored our new jerseys
