The board of management manages the school on behalf of the patron and is accountable to the patron and the Minister. The board must uphold the characteristic spirit (ethos) of the school and is accountable to the patron for so doing.
The principal is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school, including providing guidance and direction to the teachers and other staff of the school and is accountable for that management.
The roles and responsibilities of boards of management are clearly set out in the Articles of Management
for Catholic Secondary Schools. These Articles of Management receive general recognition in Section 7
(4) iv of the Education Act, 1998. In addition, Sections 14 to 21, inclusive, of the Education Act, 1998,
have set out in legislation the roles and responsibilities of boards of management. Other pieces of
legislation that have been introduced since 1998 also impact directly or indirectly on the role of boards.
