Transition Year provides a bridge between Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate. It offers a broad educational experience which aims to provide young people with the skills and support necessary to develop their own individual talents, aptitudes and abilities with regard to future educational and/or vocational preparation.
Core academic subjects Irish, English, Maths continue along with subject sampling in all the Sciences, IT and practical subjects. Modules are also provided in Music, Art, Drama, Film Studies, Social, Personal and Health Education, Religion, Personal Development, Mini-Company, and Physical Education. Opportunities also exist for students to avail of Work Experience, a Law Module, North/South Initiative, Film Studies, GAA Studies, a Musical production, Gaisce and Outdoor Education activities. These new environments provide students with opportunities to discover their own individual talents, aptitudes and abilities.
Our aim is to prepare each student for their role as an independent and responsible member of society. We encourage the involvement of parents, employers and the local community in the Transition Year Programme, specifically through Community and Work Experience programmes.
Career Guidance and specific student direction is very important to the programme and will include an opportunity for work experience (In light of the current Covid-19 restrictions this will be subject to HSE advice). We are lucky to be linked with NUIG which affords us a wealth of invaluable resources and opportunities. Transition Year offers students the opportunity to taste and reflect on career possibilities enabling them to make informed choices for the future.
TY Musical
Without exception each year the TY Musical is noted as a favourite memory. An introduction to drama begins in September and it’s fair to say that everyone feels a little bit apprehensive and self-conscious as they are pushed out of our comfort zones. Performing is generally new to everyone and when inhibitions are let go, the fun really begins with rehearsals regularly as boys and girls are put through their paces by the choreographer.
Art classes provide opportunity for the sets to be designed and painted while valuable skills are developed with students learning how to use a drill and hammer a nail!
